Following high-level diplomatic discussions in the capital between Brazil’s ambassador to Zimbabwe, Vilmar Rogeiro Coutinho Jr., and Zimbabwe’s minister of foreign affairs and international trade, Amon Murwira, the country has formally started the process of joining the BRICS grouping of emerging countries.
As the current rotating chairman of the powerful BRICS bloc (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), Brazil has promised to help Zimbabwe navigate the formalities required to

become a member.

Minister Murwira acknowledged in a post-meeting statement that the main topic of conversation was Zimbabwe’s official application to join BRICS. He underlined that the nation views joining the EU as a calculated step to strengthen ties with other growing economies and realign itself within the framework of the world economy.
“We are dedicated to taking the required diplomatic and technical actions to accomplish this goal, and Brazil has given us invaluable insight into the process,” Murwira said. The first African country to join the BRICS group was South Africa, which joined the organization in 2010 after it was first established in 2006. As a symbol of its increasing dedication to South-South cooperation and multipolar economic development, the coalition has recently expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia.

In addition to expressing confidence in Zimbabwe’s candidacy, Ambassador Coutinho emphasized Brazil’s willingness to work closely with Zimbabwe to guarantee a seamless accession process. “Zimbabwe’s involvement in the BRICS discussion would be beneficial. Their dedication and desire inspire us,” he remarked.

By supporting the interests of the Global South and promoting collaboration through investment, trade facilitation, and sustainable development, BRICS has become a potent alternative voice in global economic governance. In order to overcome long-standing sanctions and improve its economic status, Zimbabwe intends to expand its business relationships and fortify its foreign alliances, which is reflected in its bid.

During a period of changing global power dynamics, the action also represents Zimbabwe’s larger diplomatic movement toward multilateralism and South-South unity.
Observers will be keeping an eye on Harare’s implementation to see how the BRICS countries, especially China and South Africa, react to Zimbabwe’s ambitions, particularly in light of Africa’s growing influence within the group.
