The Former president of Zambia, President Edgar Lungu, has died. Reports coming from his political party, the Patriotic Front, state that he passed away on Thursday at the age of 68 at a medical center in South Africa.

It was revealed that the former president was reportedly receiving specialized treatment in South Africa in a Facebook post. The death announcement was also made in a Facebook post featuring the former president’s daughter Tasila Lungu, a member of parliament in Zambia, She stated that

“My father… had been under medical supervision in recent weeks. This condition was managed with dignity and privacy.”

Former President Lungu won a presidential election that made him president in August 2016 and held the office till August 2021. He took over his office after the death of President Michael Sata, after which he lost an election to long-time opposition leader and current President Hakainde Hichilema.

He was a lawyer who also held other Key roles in the Zambian government, like justice and defense minister.

After his electoral defeat in 2021, Lungu retired, then made a political comeback in 2023, eventually being accepted as the leader and presidential candidate for the alliance, including the Patriotic Front.
