Zambian police have arrested two men accused of plotting to harm President Hakainde Hichilema using witchcraft.
The suspects, Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, 42, and Leonard Phiri, 43, were detained in Lusaka, the capital city, and are believed to be practicing witchdoctors.
According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the suspects were allegedly hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of fugitive lawmaker Jay Banda, to carry out the act. Jay Banda, who escaped police custody in August 2024 while facing charges of aggravated robbery, remains at large.
The police disclosed that the suspects were found in possession of assorted charms, including a live chameleon, which they intended to use in their purported mission. “Their mission was to use charms to harm the Head of State, His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema,” said Hamoonga.
The suspects reportedly agreed to a payment of K2,000,000 (approximately $72,166) for the task. However, other reports suggest the amount was $7,400.
Jay Banda’s involvement has drawn widespread attention, particularly as his brother, Nelson Banda, faces accusations of orchestrating the plot. Emmanuel Banda, another relative, was recently arrested in Zimbabwe on unrelated robbery charges and has not been seen in public since denying the allegations.
The suspects face multiple charges, including practicing witchcraft, possession of charms, and cruelty to animals. Police confirmed that they would appear in court soon, as investigations into the case continue.
The incident has sparked discussions about the influence of traditional beliefs in modern politics and the legal ramifications for those involved in such practices.
