In a significant diplomatic development, the United States has expelled South Africa’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, marking a new low in relations between the two nations. On March 14, 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Rasool “persona non grata,” accusing him of being a “race-baiting politician” who harbors animosity towards America and President Donald Trump.
This action follows Rasool’s recent remarks during a webinar, where he criticized the Trump administration’s policies, attributing them to white supremacist ideologies. He argued that these policies adversely affect both the global order and South Africa’s interests.
The expulsion underscores the deteriorating relations between Washington and Pretoria. Since President Trump’s inauguration in January, the U.S. has taken a hard stance against South Africa, including cutting federal funding that supported essential HIV/AIDS and humanitarian programs. The Trump administration has also criticized South Africa’s land redistribution policies and expressed intentions to offer U.S. citizenship to white Afrikaner farmers, further straining diplomatic ties. 
In response, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed regret over the U.S. decision and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to maintaining a constructive relationship with the United States. He emphasized the importance of diplomacy and dialogue in resolving such disputes.
