Washington D.C. – The US State Department has approved a $100 million foreign military sale to Zambia for a fleet of Bell 412 helicopters and associated logistics support. This significant deal marks a further step in strengthening defense cooperation between the two nations.
The contract, which designates Bell Textron as the primary contractor, will provide Zambia with a fleet of Bell 412 Enhanced Performance Exportable Medium-Lift Transport Helicopters equipped with advanced features such as advanced communication systems, navigation tools, weather radar, and transponder capabilities.
Beyond the aircraft themselves, the package includes comprehensive training programs for pilots and maintenance personnel, technical assistance, contractor field support, and aviation ground support equipment. Spare parts, specialized tools, and air freight delivery are also included in the agreement.
This military sale is strategically designed to enhance Zambia’s capabilities in several key areas:
- Peacekeeping Operations: The helicopters will significantly bolster Zambia’s ability to contribute effectively to regional and international peacekeeping missions.
- Disaster Response: The aircraft will play a crucial role in responding to natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and wildfires, enabling rapid deployment of aid and personnel to affected areas.
- Regional Security Missions: The helicopters will enhance Zambia’s capacity to address security challenges within its borders and contribute to regional security efforts.
- Humanitarian Aid: The aircraft will facilitate the efficient delivery of humanitarian aid to remote and inaccessible regions.
The Bell 412EP helicopters are versatile aircraft, capable of carrying up to 13 passengers and handling an external load of approximately 3,000 kilograms.
