Uganda’s army chief, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and son of President Yoweri Museveni, announced his departure from X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, citing a focus on his role as head of the Ugandan People’s Defence Forces.
This decision follows a series of controversial posts that have sparked diplomatic and political tensions.
Among his inflammatory remarks, Kainerugaba, 50, recently claimed he would have killed opposition leader Bobi Wine if not for his father’s presence, referring to President Museveni by the honorific “Mzee.”
His history of contentious tweets includes a 2022 post threatening to invade Kenya and capturing Nairobi within two weeks, forcing Museveni to issue a public apology. Additionally, he voiced support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Tigrayan rebels during Ethiopia’s conflict, further straining Uganda’s diplomatic relations.
Last month, Kainerugaba stirred another uproar by threatening to seize Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, contingent on the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. The post, later deleted, was disavowed by Uganda’s government as unrepresentative of its official stance.
Despite his controversial statements, Kainerugaba also engaged in lighter topics, like his final thread listing the world’s most handsome men, topped by his father. His relationship with the platform has been tumultuous, having previously deactivated his account in April 2022, only to return days later.
Kainerugaba’s exit from X marks the end of a turbulent chapter, offering potential relief to Uganda’s diplomatic corps while leaving a legacy of contentious social media presence.
