In a pivotal move to foster peace, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has offered to mediate ongoing tensions between Sudan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The proposal came during a telephone conversation with Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel-Fattah Burhan, as disclosed by the Turkish presidential communications office on Friday.

This offer follows Erdogan’s recent success in brokering an agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia, which has initiated technical talks to resolve disputes stemming from Ethiopia’s deal with Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region of Somalia.

Erdogan’s Vision for Sudan

During the discussion, Erdogan emphasized Turkey’s commitment to Sudan’s stability and territorial integrity. “Turkey’s core principles include establishing peace and stability in Sudan, preserving its territorial integrity and sovereignty, and preventing the country from becoming a zone of external interventions,” Erdogan stated.

Turkey’s interest in mediating stems from its broader aim to ensure regional stability and reduce foreign influences in conflict zones. Erdogan’s approach underscores Turkey’s growing role as a peace broker in the Horn of Africa and surrounding regions.

The Conflict Between Sudan and the UAE

Sudan’s government has accused the UAE of providing weapons to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a rival paramilitary group, exacerbating the ongoing conflict within the country. The UAE, however, has denied these allegations, countering that Sudan’s government has refused to engage in meaningful peace negotiations with its adversary.

This diplomatic standoff has prolonged the violence in Sudan, which has already displaced millions and claimed thousands of lives. Experts suggest that Erdogan’s mediation efforts could be instrumental in bridging the divide, given Turkey’s historical ties and strategic interests in the region.

Turkey’s Growing Influence in Mediation

Erdogan’s proactive diplomacy comes at a critical time. Earlier this week, he facilitated a deal between Ethiopia and Somalia, showcasing Turkey’s ability to navigate complex geopolitical disputes.

This latest offer to mediate between Sudan and the UAE could further solidify Turkey’s role as a key player in fostering peace and cooperation in conflict-prone regions.

What Lies Ahead?

The success of Erdogan’s mediation efforts depends on the willingness of both Sudan and the UAE to engage in dialogue. With tensions high and accusations flying, Turkey’s ability to maintain neutrality and build trust will be crucial.

As the conflict in Sudan continues to impact millions, Erdogan’s offer of mediation serves as a beacon of hope. Will Turkey’s efforts succeed in paving the way for peace between Sudan and the UAE?
