A devastating stampede on Wednesday at a funfair in Basorun, Oyo State, Nigeria, has claimed the lives of several children, leaving families and the community in mourning. The incident occurred at the Islamic High School, where an event organized for families turned tragic.
In a statement, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying, “Sadly, a stampede at the venue has led to multiple loss of lives and injuries. This is a very sad day. We sympathize with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths.”
Security forces quickly intervened at the scene and detained the event organizers for questioning. The Women In Need Of Guidance and Support Foundation, identified as the organizers, had planned to host up to 5,000 children at this year’s event, promising scholarships and other prizes.
The national emergency services deployed teams to assist victims, while injured children were rushed to local hospitals. Parents have been urged to visit the hospitals to locate missing loved ones.
Footage from the scene captured a somber crowd of children witnessing others being carried away from an open field.
Governor Makinde assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, stating, “Anyone directly or remotely involved in this disaster will be held accountable.”
This tragedy casts a shadow on an event meant to bring joy to young lives, leaving unanswered questions about safety protocols and crowd control at such large gatherings.
