Mozambique’s new parliament was inaugurated on Monday in Maputo amidst tight security, as opposition-led protests and a general strike disrupted the city.

The ceremony, held at the National Assembly, witnessed the swearing-in of 250 lawmakers, though about 30 seats remained unoccupied.

Opposition parties Renamo and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) boycotted the event, challenging the October 9 election results and demanding a recount.

Venancio Mondlane, leader of the opposition, spearheaded the protests, alleging electoral fraud and calling for nationwide strikes.

Demonstrators erected barricades and set tires ablaze in the streets, prompting police to deploy tear gas to disperse the crowds. “We are tired of manipulation. Independence begins today,” declared Osvaldo, a protester on the frontlines.

Despite fears of violence, some citizens showed solidarity with the demonstrations. Selzio, a shopkeeper who closed his business in support of the strike, remarked, “Change requires sacrifice.” Businesses in several parts of the city remained shuttered amid fears of looting.

While opposition MPs boycotted the parliament’s opening, members of the Podemos party attended, with MP Ivandro Massingue labeling the boycott as “cowardice.”

Newly elected Speaker Margarida Talapa vowed to foster a parliament “open to dialogue,” a sentiment echoed by incoming President Daniel Chapo, who urged for unity amidst growing tensions.

Skepticism, however, prevails among Mozambicans. Many citizens criticize the government for failing to address worsening economic and social conditions, expressing doubt over its ability to unite a divided nation.

As Maputo remains gripped by unrest, the path forward for Mozambique’s new leadership appears fraught with challenges. Will the calls for change be met, or will the impasse deepen the nation’s divisions?
