Nigerian singer-songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female African artist to amass over 1 billion streams on Spotify. This remarkable feat was accomplished through her collaboration with American artists Future and Drake on the 2022 hit single “Wait For U.”
“Wait For U,” which samples Tems’ song “Higher” from her 2020 debut EP For Broken Ears, debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart upon its release. This achievement made Tems the first African artist to debut atop this prestigious chart.
