Marburg Virus Outbreak Confirmed in Tanzania
Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Marburg virus in the northwestern Kagera region. Initial government denials have given way to urgency as the virus, causing hemorrhagic fever with up to a 90% fatality rate, has claimed lives and raised regional concerns.

Health authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO) are swiftly acting to contain the spread, including contact tracing, public awareness campaigns, and isolation units. The virus, related to Ebola and transmitted from fruit bats to humans, is spreading through infected bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces.
The Kagera region, a transit hub bordering Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi, faces high risk due to population mobility.
This is Tanzania’s second encounter with the Marburg virus in two years, highlighting the need for strengthened disease surveillance and healthcare infrastructure.
