In the early hours of March 24, 2025, a suspected poacher was fatally wounded during a confrontation with field rangers in Kruger National Park (KNP), South Africa. Upon being approached, the suspects reportedly opened fire, prompting the rangers to return fire in self-defense. One suspect was killed in the exchange, while the other managed to escape.

Authorities recovered a hunting rifle, ammunition, and a knife from the deceased suspect, indicating intentions of illegal hunting within the protected area. The surviving suspect remains at large, and a search operation has been initiated to apprehend him.

Despite these measures, poaching remains a significant threat. Since January, 41 suspected poachers have been arrested in KNP, reflecting the ongoing battle between conservation authorities and illegal hunters.

The South African Police Service has launched an investigation into the recent shooting, aiming to gather more information about the suspects and their operations. Authorities urge the public to report any suspicious activities to aid in the preservation of South Africa’s rich biodiversity.
