Khartoum, Sudan – Sudanese Sovereign Council leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has definitively ruled out a return to the pre-war status quo with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

In a televised address marking the country’s 69th Independence Day, General Burhan stated that the devastating conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has irrevocably altered the political landscape.

While expressing openness to genuine initiatives aimed at ending the war and facilitating the safe return of displaced civilians, General Burhan emphasized that the RSF cannot be allowed to remain a part of Sudan’s political future.

He condemned the RSF’s actions, accusing them of widespread violence, displacement, and human rights abuses against the Sudanese people.

The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF has had a devastating impact on the country, with over 25,000 people killed and millions displaced. The fighting has crippled essential services, triggered a humanitarian crisis, and plunged the nation into a state of profound instability.

Despite ongoing international mediation efforts, including those led by the US and Saudi Arabia, a lasting ceasefire remains elusive.
