South African singer and actress Winnie Khumalo has passed away at the age of 51, following a brief illness, her family confirmed.
Khumalo, celebrated for her iconic Afropop hit “Live My Life,” had a career spanning decades, beginning in the 1980s. She also appeared in several popular South African television series and collaborated with renowned artists, including the late Brenda Fassie.
According to her sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, Khumalo died on Tuesday while being rushed to the hospital. “My sister was sick. She had a short illness, and we really thought she was recovering. But this morning, it became evident she hadn’t fully recovered. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital,” Rakeepile shared. 
The exact cause of her illness has not been disclosed.
Khumalo leaves behind a rich legacy in both music and television, known for her powerful voice and versatility as a performer. She released numerous solo albums during her career and served as a backup singer to Brenda Fassie, earning her a prominent place in South Africa’s music history.
She is survived by her daughter, Rethabile Khumalo, a singer following in her footsteps, and her son, Thabo Khumalo.
Tributes have poured in from fans and celebrities alike, expressing shock and mourning her passing. Kalawa Jazmee Records, the label she worked with, described her as a “true icon” who inspired many with her exceptional voice and unforgettable performances.
In a statement, the label said, “Her passion, talent, and dedication to her craft have left an indelible mark on the industry and in the hearts of her fans.”
Khumalo’s death marks the end of an era for South African music, but her influence and contributions will continue to resonate for years to come.
