Freetown, Sierra Leone — Sierra Leone has confirmed its first Mpox case since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a public health emergency of international concern in August 2024.
The National Public Health Agency (NPHA) disclosed this development late Friday.
The patient is a 27-year-old man from the Western Area Rural District. Authorities are conducting extensive contact tracing and investigations to identify potential exposures and curb the virus’s spread.
Mpox Rapid Response Measures
Sierra Leone’s health teams have activated the incident command system to manage and contain the outbreak. Efforts include isolating the patient in a secure medical facility, providing appropriate care, and monitoring identified contacts for 21 days.
The country is working closely with international partners, including the WHO, to receive technical and logistical support for its response efforts.
The NPHA has urged citizens to remain calm and vigilant while adhering to health guidelines. “Collective efforts are critical to controlling this outbreak and ensuring the nation’s safety,” the statement emphasized.
As Sierra Leone navigates this public health challenge, international collaboration and local vigilance remain vital. Will these combined efforts effectively halt the spread of Mpox in the region?
