South Africa is joining the global community in celebrating International Day of Forests, with a focus on the vital role forests play in both environmental and human well-being . This year’s commemoration includes a tree-planting initiative in Diepsloot, aiming to plant 100 trees and raise awareness about the importance of forests for future generations .
Forests are crucial to Africa as they provide energy, assist agriculture, and enrich the soil . Tree planting can significantly reduce poverty and generate economic benefits, along with environmental gains. Several organizations are joining the movement, such as Food & Trees for Africa, which recently collaborated with @discovery_sa to plant trees at @afrikatikkun in Diepsloot.
Additionally, the NDA is participating in vegetable and tree planting activities around the Green Acres Farm in Diepsloot. These activities highlight the importance of forests and education.
