Kigali, April 7, 2025 — Rwanda today begins a solemn week of remembrance as the nation commemorates the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, which claimed the lives of more than 800,000 people in just 100 days. The official ceremonies, held in Kigali and across the country, unite Rwandans and the international community in honoring the victims and reflecting on the journey of recovery.

President Paul Kagame led the memorial at the Kigali Genocide Memorial, laying a wreath in silence alongside survivors, youth leaders, and foreign dignitaries. The flame of remembrance — “Urumuri rw’icyizere” (Light of Hope) — will burn for 100 days, symbolizing the duration of the genocide.

Across Rwanda, flags are flown at half-mast as communities participate in dialogues, prayer services, and memorial walks. Survivors continue to share their stories, a critical part of the country’s efforts to promote healing, unity, and the fight against genocide ideology.

The 2025 commemoration theme — “Remember, Unite, Renew” — highlights Rwanda’s transformation from a nation torn apart by ethnic violence to one that now stands as a model of post-conflict reconciliation and development. Still, the trauma of 1994 lingers. Mental health support, survivor welfare, and justice for ongoing genocide-related crimes remain core challenges.

As Rwanda remembers its darkest chapter, the country reaffirms its commitment to peace, reconciliation, and never allowing history to repeat itself. The lessons of 1994 echo beyond its borders — reminding Africa and the world of the cost of hatred and the power of unity.
