The World Food Program (WFP) has reported that nearly 200,000 people have been displaced in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to intense fighting between the Congolese military and armed groups, including the M23 rebel group.
The renewed outbreak of violence, which began in November 2024, has significantly worsened the humanitarian situation in the region.
The WFP noted that incidents of inter-community violence have been reported across the eastern province of North Kivu and other affected areas.
The humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC is complex and multifaceted. The WFP has highlighted that the country faces a severe food security crisis, with an estimated 25.6 million people experiencing food insecurity.
This includes 6.2 million individuals in the eastern provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri, who are facing acute food insecurity.
In response to the escalating crisis, the WFP has ramped up its emergency operations to provide critical assistance to internally displaced persons, refugees, and host communities in the most affected areas.
The recent reoccupation of the key town of Masisi in North Kivu by the M23 rebel group has further exacerbated the humanitarian situation. While the Congolese army remains committed to regaining control of the territory, the ongoing conflict continues to pose significant challenges to humanitarian relief efforts.
The WFP’s warning underscores the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance and a concerted effort to address the root causes of the conflict in eastern DRC.
