On January 28, 2025, violent protests erupted in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as demonstrators attacked several embassies, expressing outrage over the escalating conflict in the eastern part of the country. The unrest was primarily directed at nations perceived to be supporting the M23 rebels, who have intensified their offensive in recent weeks.
Protesters targeted the embassies of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United States, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and the United Nations. Several embassy gates were set ablaze, and properties were damaged. The demonstrators accused these countries of complicity in supporting the M23 rebels, who recently overtook the eastern provincial capital, Goma.

In response to the attacks, France’s Foreign Minister, Jean-Noel Barrot, condemned the violence, stating that the attacks were “unacceptable” and that measures were being taken to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel and citizens.
The M23 rebels, reportedly backed by Rwanda, have captured Goma, a strategic city in eastern Congo. The offensive has led to widespread violence, looting, and numerous casualties, with hospitals overwhelmed by the influx of wounded individuals. The United Nations has reported bodies lying in the streets and a dire humanitarian situation.
The Congolese government has urged protesters to refrain from violence and maintain peaceful demonstrations, emphasizing their right to express anger but calling for respect towards diplomatic missions. Security forces have been deployed to protect embassies and restore order in the capital.
The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence in the DRC. The European Union condemned the attacks on embassies, highlighting the necessity of protecting diplomatic missions under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Diplomatic efforts are underway to address the crisis and prevent further escalation.
As the situation develops, the DRC faces significant challenges in addressing both the internal conflict with the M23 rebels and the external diplomatic tensions arising from the recent attacks on foreign embassies. The need for a comprehensive approach to restore peace and stability in the region is more pressing than ever.
