The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed disapproval over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to confer Nigeria’s second-highest national honor, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The award was presented during Modi’s visit to Nigeria on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at a bilateral meeting held at the State House in Abuja.
President Tinubu described the honor as a reflection of Nigeria’s appreciation for its partnership with India, dubbing India and Nigeria “natural partners” as the largest democracies in the world and Africa, respectively. However, the PDP believes the decision lacked merit.
Speaking to The Punch, Timothy Osadolor, the PDP’s Deputy National Youth Leader, called the conferment a “misplacement of priorities.” While acknowledging that the president holds the prerogative to grant national honors, Osadolor emphasized that such awards should follow clear criteria.
“It is not something you dish out for the sake of friendship,” Osadolor remarked. “I don’t know what the Indian prime minister has done to have warranted such an honor. It is a misplacement of priorities.”
Osadolor further noted that the President could have used the opportunity to engage Modi on strategies for economic transformation, referencing India’s evolution from being labeled the world’s “poverty capital” to becoming one of the fastest-growing economies globally.
Highlights from Modi’s Visit
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi expressed camaraderie with President Tinubu by addressing him in Yoruba, referring to him as “ore mi,” which translates to “my friend.” Modi’s presence marked a significant moment in strengthening diplomatic ties between the two nations.
The Indian delegation highlighted the strategic partnership between Nigeria and India, emphasizing the potential for collaboration in economic development, technology, and governance.
Public Debate
The PDP’s reaction has sparked discussions among Nigerians about the appropriateness of awarding such high honors to foreign dignitaries. Critics argue that national awards should primarily recognize individuals whose contributions directly benefit Nigeria.
While Tinubu’s gesture may symbolize goodwill in fostering international relations, its domestic reception underscores the importance of ensuring that such decisions align with public expectations and priorities.
