Dr. Patrice Motsepe is on track to secure a second term as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) after no other candidates came forward by the nomination deadline on 12 November 2024. The South African billionaire and former Mamelodi Sundowns chairman appears to be running unopposed for the election scheduled for 12 March 2025, solidifying his leadership in African football.
Motsepe, who initially assumed office in March 2021, has received overwhelming support from various CAF Member Association Presidents, Zonal Union Presidents, and other stakeholders urging him to continue as head of the Cairo-based institution. His announcement to seek reelection coincided with the latest CAF General Assembly held in Addis Ababa, further solidifying his bid to retain the top post.
Since taking over from the controversial Ahmad Ahmad administration, Dr. Motsepe has been widely credited with revitalizing the financial and operational structure of CAF. Under his stewardship, the organization reduced its losses from a staggering $28.9 million (R525.9 million) to $9.2 million (R167 million). Moreover, CAF has projected a net profit of $11.7 million (R212.8 million) for the 2024/25 budget, showcasing a significant fiscal turnaround.
Motsepe’s leadership has also brought tangible benefits to African football. He increased prize money for CAF competitions and boosted annual grants to member associations, cementing his reputation as a reformist. Despite speculation that figures like Cameroonian Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o and former Egyptian Football Association President Hany Abou Rida might challenge him, no formal bids were submitted by the deadline.
With no rivals in sight, Dr. Motsepe’s unopposed candidacy suggests a strong endorsement of his efforts to rebuild trust and transparency within African football governance.
