Maputo, Mozambique – In a dramatic turn of events, over 6,000 inmates escaped from a high-security prison in Maputo on Christmas Day, amidst widespread post-election violence gripping the country.

The mass escape followed a prison break that erupted during violent protests against the recent election results.

The protests, triggered by the Constitutional Council’s confirmation of the ruling Frelimo party’s victory in the October 9th elections, have seen widespread unrest across the country. Police stations, infrastructure, and vehicles have been targeted, and violence has escalated.

During the prison break, 33 inmates lost their lives in clashes with security forces, while 15 others sustained injuries. The escape was facilitated by a group of protesters who breached the prison walls, allowing inmates to seize the opportunity to flee.

“A curious fact is that 29 convicted terrorists were among those who escaped,” stated Police Chief Bernardino Rafael, expressing grave concern over the potential security implications. He urged the public to assist authorities in apprehending the escaped prisoners, including 29 convicted terrorists.

Videos circulating on social media captured the chaotic scenes, showcasing inmates fleeing the prison and security forces attempting to recapture them. The incident has further exacerbated the already tense situation in Mozambique and raised serious concerns about national security.
