The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has emphasized the urgent need for Simon Ekpa extradition following his arrest in Finland on terror-related charges. The Finnish-Nigerian separatist leader, a prominent figure in the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), faces accusations of incitement to violence and terrorism financing. Nigerian authorities remain steadfast in their demand for him to face justice on home soil.

Simon Ekpa Extradition Gains Momentum

The Finnish authorities apprehended Simon Ekpa alongside four other suspects for activities linked to terrorism. According to the Finnish Central Criminal Police, Ekpa allegedly engaged in public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent. The Päijät-Häme District Court subsequently remanded him in custody, underscoring the seriousness of the charges.

In reaction, Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, welcomed the arrest. He described it as a positive step towards ensuring accountability for Ekpa’s alleged role in promoting unrest in Southeastern Nigeria.

“The Chief of Defence Staff has consistently called for Ekpa’s arrest due to his significant involvement in fueling terrorism in the region. His detention demonstrates the growing collaboration between Nigeria and the international community in combating terrorism,” Buba remarked.

Military Hopes for Simon Ekpa Extradition

Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, echoed similar sentiments. Additionally, he expressed optimism about Simon Ekpa’s extradition. He emphasized that holding Ekpa accountable would serve as a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts.

Moreover, the Nigerian military has consistently advocated for increased international cooperation to tackle individuals inciting violence and destabilizing the country. Indeed, Ekpa’s case stands as a critical example of how international partnerships can address transnational terrorism.

Military Achievements Against Terrorism

In addition to their push for Simon Ekpa extradition, the Nigerian Armed Forces continue to record substantial victories in their fight against insurgency. Troops recently eliminated Munzur Ya Audu, a notorious terrorist commander, during a targeted operation in the Northeast. Major General Buba spoke on this success as a key milestone in the nation’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign.

“The Armed Forces remain unwavering in their resolve to dismantle terrorist networks across the country. We are relentlessly collecting intelligence, pursuing insurgents, and neutralizing threats wherever they emerge,” he stated.

Buba revealed that recent military operations resulted in the neutralization of 115 insurgents, the arrest of 238 terrorism-linked suspects, and the rescue of 138 kidnapped victims. The military also intercepted oil theft operations worth over ₦921 million in the South-South region while recovering a significant cache of arms and ammunition.

Continued Efforts to Strengthen National Security

Despite the successes, the military has faced challenges, including the loss of seven personnel during separate attacks in Borno and Abia states. Nevertheless, the Armed Forces remain committed to degrading the capabilities of terrorists and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.

Major General Buba reiterated the military’s determination, stating, “We are advancing through targeted airstrikes and ground operations to eliminate terrorist enclaves and create a safer Nigeria for all.”

Additionally, the Nigerian Defence Headquarters remains resolute in its call for Simon Ekpa’s extradition, highlighting the importance of accountability in combating terrorism. Indeed, Ekpa’s detention represents a significant step in addressing the root causes of instability in Southeastern Nigeria.

Furthermore, in collaboration with international partners, Nigeria aims to strengthen its fight against terrorism and ensure lasting peace and security for its citizens.
