Codix Bio Ltd., a Nigerian pharmaceutical producer, is filling a vital healthcare gap. At its new production facility just outside of Lagos, the company plans to manufacture millions of HIV and malaria test kits.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has significantly reduced its international assistance, prompting this action, which has prompted action from both local authorities and private sector participants. The Nigerian government has promised to look for other sources of funding.

Codix Bio’s new manufacturing initiative is a direct response to this need. According to the company’s General Manager, Olanrewaju Balaja, the test kits will begin rolling out later this month. The plant is operating in partnership with South Korean pharmaceutical firm SD Biosensor and is receiving support from the World Health Organization (WHO).

By producing test kits domestically, Codix Bio not only aims to bolster Nigeria’s healthcare system but also strengthen its supply chain resilience across West Africa. The effort aligns with broader goals of healthcare localization, supply independence, and capacity building on the African continent.

As donor aid becomes less predictable, Codix Bio’s initiative could serve as a model for public-private partnerships driving sustainable healthcare solutions in Nigeria and beyond.
