Mubarak Bala, a prominent Nigerian atheist who was imprisoned for four years on blasphemy charges, has been released from prison.
Bala, who was convicted in 2022 for a controversial Facebook post shared in 2020, had faced significant threats to his safety and feared for his life during his incarceration.
Blasphemy is a serious offense in Nigeria, punishable under both Sharia law, which operates in 12 northern states, and the country’s criminal code. Bala’s conviction sparked international condemnation from human rights groups and raised serious concerns about freedom of speech in the country.
Despite facing immense pressure and threats, Bala maintained his stance. His release has brought relief to many within Nigeria’s atheist and humanist communities, although concerns remain regarding his safety.
Bala, who renounced Islam in 2014, spent two years in pre-trial detention before his conviction. He pleaded guilty to the charges, a decision he later explained was made to protect his supporters and legal team from potential retaliation.
“I believe what I did saved not only my life, but people in Kano,” Bala said, referring to the city where he was imprisoned. “Especially those that were attached to my case, because they are also a target.”
Following his release, Bala expressed his eagerness to reconnect with his young son, who was just six weeks old when he was imprisoned. He emphasized that despite the challenges and risks, he has no regrets about his activism.
