Zamfara, Nigeria – A Nigerian military airstrike intended to target armed groups in the conflict-ridden northwest region has tragically resulted in the deaths of several civilians.
The incident, which occurred in the Zurmi and Maradun areas of Zamfara state, marks the third such misfire by the military in a little over a year.
Civilian Casualties
According to Sulaiman Bala Idris, the spokesman for the Zamfara state governor, the Nigerian Air Force was targeting rebels in the region. However, the airstrike mistakenly struck a group of civilians working in community security outfits. 
Idris stated, “Regrettably, some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and local vigilantes were also affected during the operation in Tungar Kara, resulting in the loss of lives.” He explained that they were “mistakenly identified as bandits fleeing” the area.
While the exact number of civilian casualties remains unclear, local resident Salisu Maradun reported witnessing up to 20 bodies and 10 individuals being treated for injuries.
Military Response
Despite the tragic loss of civilian lives, the Zamfara government described the weekend airstrike as “successful,” emphasizing its impact on “decisively targeting bandits” as part of a “renewed onslaught” by the military.
The statement also reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting intelligence sharing, providing logistics, and strengthening community engagement.
History of Airstrike Errors
This incident highlights a recurring pattern of civilian casualties in Nigerian military airstrikes. According to SBM Intelligence, a Lagos-based research firm, approximately 400 civilians have been killed in such operations since 2017.
A previous incident in December 2023, where over 80 civilians were mistakenly killed during a religious gathering in Kaduna state, sparked widespread condemnation. While the Nigerian military announced that two personnel would face court-martial in May 2024, the lack of transparency surrounding the investigation has drawn criticism from human rights groups.
This latest tragedy spotlights the urgent need for improved targeting procedures and a greater emphasis on civilian protection in military operations. It also highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing such incidents.
