The 27-year-old Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman, triumphed over strong competition to win the 2024 Africa Best Player of the Year Award. Lookman beat notable rivals such as Cote d’Ivoire and Brighton & Hove Albion winger Simon Adingra.
Other players he outshined include Borussia Dortmund and Guinea international striker Serhou Guirassy, Morocco right-back Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain, and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams of South Africa.
Lookman has been in exceptional form this year, helping his Italian Serie A club, Atalanta, emerge as title contenders and secure the UEFA Europa League trophy. This marked Atalanta’s first major trophy in 61 years.
In the Europa League final, Lookman delivered a sensational performance, scoring a hat-trick as Atalanta became the only team in the 2023-24 campaign to defeat German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
Lookman’s remarkable display in the final is regarded as one of the finest performances in European football history.
He also played a crucial role in helping Nigeria reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, where they ultimately lost to the host nation. Lookman’s contribution included scoring three goals, and he was named in the Team of the Tournament. A Ballon d’Or nominee, Lookman continues his pursuit of greatness.
