Third Hosting Milestone for Nigeria
Nigeria has once again claimed the spotlight in African sports by securing the hosting rights for the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) 2026. This continental ladies’ golf championship, first held in Zimbabwe in 1992, is regarded as the pinnacle of African women’s golf.
The 2026 edition will mark the third time Nigeria hosts this prestigious tournament. Previous editions took place in 1996 at the Ikoyi Club and in 2010 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja.
The President of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN), Evelyn Oyome, expressed her pride in Nigeria’s successful bid. She shared, “Nigeria obtained the lion’s share of votes from 20 participating countries, a testament to our growing reputation in golf. Hosting the West and Central Africa Challenge Trophy last year gave us a significant edge.”
FCT Abuja: The Ideal Host City for AACT 2026
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has been chosen as the host city for the tournament.
Oyome affirmed, “The FCT met all the criteria for hosting such a monumental event. It’s an incredible opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s capital as a top-notch golfing destination to over 30 participating countries.”
With preparations underway, the AACT 2026 is expected to spotlight Nigeria’s rich golfing culture while promoting tourism and fostering international camaraderie.
The Legacy of Nigeria in African Golf
Nigeria’s journey in African golf continues to gain momentum. The country’s successful hosting of the West and Central Africa Challenge Trophy in 2023 at Lakowe Lakes Golf Estate demonstrated its capacity to stage international golf events. That event drew participation from over ten countries, further establishing Nigeria as a key player in the sport.
Oyome highlighted that these achievements reflect the potential of golf to drive economic and cultural growth, stating, “The AACT is equivalent to the Africa Cup of Nations in football. It is a powerful platform to elevate Nigeria’s global image.”
Lessons from Morocco’s AACT 16th Edition
The 16th edition of the AACT recently concluded in Morocco, where the host nation emerged victorious with a total score of -7. South Africa, a dominant force in the tournament’s history, finished second, while Kenya claimed third place.
The Nigerian team, led by Evelyn Oyome and featuring players Nnenna Ahube and Pearl Omaruaye, finished 12th overall and first among West African countries.
Reflecting on the competition, Ahube said, “It was my first time playing in the AACT, and while the experience was exciting, we faced challenges. Countries like South Africa had ample preparation and support, which made a big difference.”
AACT 2026: A Gateway to Greater Opportunities
Ahube emphasized the importance of early preparation and sponsorship to achieve better results in future competitions. “With more talent identification, sponsorship, and advanced training, Nigeria can secure top positions in upcoming tournaments,” she added.
Hosting the AACT 2026 positions Nigeria to further develop its golfing infrastructure, inspire young golfers, and promote the sport across the continent. The championship is set to be a milestone event, fostering unity and excellence in African women’s golf.
