This initiative represents a proactive approach to addressing public concerns regarding police interactions.

Adejobi explained that the deployment of body cameras aligns with global best practices and ensures accountability for both officers and citizens. “Body cameras will serve as evidence for what transpires during police-citizen engagements, protecting all parties involved,” he stated.

He added that the Inspector General of Police had previously committed to this initiative following demands for reform during the #EndSARS protests.

The spokesperson clarified that efforts to implement this technology are underway. The police are currently collaborating with the Ministry of Police Affairs to finalize the procurement process.

He assured Nigerians that officers would soon be equipped with these devices.

Leveraging Existing Mechanisms for Complaints

Addressing claims of a reactive stance, Adejobi pointed out that the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU), established under Section 131 of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, provides a platform for citizens to report grievances. This mechanism operates in all 37 commands across the country, promoting a culture of accountability and responsiveness.

However, Adejobi acknowledged that equipping over 370,000 officers with body cameras is a significant fiscal undertaking.

“We are working with the government to ensure this becomes a reality, as it is vital for fostering trust between the police and the public,” he said.

The imminent implementation of body cameras is a needful step toward improving Nigeria’s law enforcement openness. The Nigeria Police Force hopes to create a safer and more accountable society by merging existing complaint methods with cutting-edge technology.
