The Nigerian government has announced plans to repatriate over 400,000 citizens currently taking refuge in Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. This initiative aims to address the significant number of Nigerians who have fled to neighboring countries due to ongoing security challenges and economic hardships.

Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), Tijani Ahmed, highlighted the urgency of the situation during a recent technical working group meeting in Abuja. He emphasized the government’s commitment to facilitating the safe and voluntary return of these refugees.

“We are here to discuss the repatriation of Nigerians living in Cameroon and Chad, where we have a tripartite agreement signed by the governments of Chad, Nigeria, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Last week, we were in Chad where repatriation has taken place, and we are hoping that the repatriation will continue,” Ahmed stated.

The NCFRMI has already commenced efforts, with 3,000 refugees recently returned from Chad through collaborative efforts with the Borno State government. The technical working group is now focused on streamlining processes to ensure the continuous and efficient repatriation of refugees from all three countries.

UNHCR Deputy Representative in Nigeria, Bernadette Muteshi, reaffirmed the agency’s support, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the tripartite agreements to ensure a smooth and dignified return process.

This large-scale repatriation plan underscores the Nigerian government’s dedication to addressing the root causes of displacement and providing sustainable solutions for its citizens affected by conflict and economic instability.
