A devastating boat disaster on River Benue near Ocholonya village has left over 20 people dead, including women and children.
The victims, primarily traders, were reportedly returning to Doma in Nasarawa State after attending the bustling Ocholonya market on Saturday when their wooden boat capsized.
Victims Were Mostly Traders
The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin James, confirmed the tragic incident. He revealed that the victims hailed from Apochi and Odenyi communities in Nasarawa State and were returning home when the tragedy struck.
“I have been informed about the accident, and reports indicate that over 20 people might have died. Local divers have recovered some bodies, but I am waiting for a formal update to confirm the exact number,” James stated.
Rescue Efforts and Eyewitness Accounts
Efforts are currently underway to recover more victims and assist affected families. The Nigerian Navy has also been called upon to bolster rescue operations, as the search continues for missing individuals.
An eyewitness recounted the harrowing event, saying, “Yesterday (Saturday) was Ocholonya market day. The boat was carrying women and children back to Odenyi in Nasarawa State when it capsized.”
Local divers have since retrieved some bodies, although the total number of casualties remains uncertain. Meanwhile, officials are coordinating with Nasarawa State authorities to console grieving families and provide the necessary support.

As of now, the Benue State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the disaster. Catherine Anene, the Command’s spokesperson, is expected to provide more details soon.
