Capacity Building to Drive Efficiency

In 2024, the NBC focused on extensive training for its workforce, emphasizing advanced technologies and modern boundary demarcation methods. These training sessions enabled staff to enhance their precision in surveys, stakeholder engagement, and dispute resolution.

Adaji elaborated, “Our team now has the expertise to perform highly accurate boundary surveys and execute efficient demarcation activities.”

Digitization and Research-Led Solutions

A core component of NBC’s 2024 agenda involved research and digitization. The commission modernized its library to provide seamless access to historical and legal documents. Comprehensive studies were conducted on critical boundaries, such as Osun/Ogun and Adamawa/Taraba, offering valuable insights for policy formulation.

“These studies allow us to create evidence-based solutions for conflict resolution,” Adaji noted, further emphasizing the role of cultural and socio-economic dynamics in shaping boundary policies.

Major Boundary Dispute Resolutions

The NBC achieved significant milestones in resolving several high-profile disputes this year.

  • Anambra/Enugu Boundary: The innovative “Anambra/Enugu Home Grown Formula” facilitated demarcation by leveraging local engagement and political will.
  • Benue/Nasarawa Boundary: The NBC revived pillar emplacement projects and fostered dialogue among stakeholders, breaking years of stalemates.
  • Kebbi/Niger Boundary: By forming technical committees to trace boundaries using historical data, the commission laid the groundwork for peaceful resolutions.

Key Boundary Verification Projects

Verification and alignment efforts spanned various states, including Gombe/Taraba, FCT/Nasarawa, and Enugu/Kogi. Determining the Ekiti/Ondo/Osun tripartite point was another notable accomplishment.

“These activities reinforce our commitment to accuracy, fairness, and peaceful coexistence,” said Adaji.

A Vision for the Future of Boundary Management

Looking ahead to 2025, the NBC remains steadfast in its mission to resolve disputes and foster sustainable development along Nigeria’s interstate boundaries. By embracing drones and advanced technology, the commission is setting a new standard in boundary management.

Adaji concluded, “Our dedication to promoting peaceful coexistence through technological innovation remains unwavering.”
