The Netherlands has announced the return of 119 Benin Bronzes to Nigeria, marking a significant step in the global effort to repatriate looted African artifacts. The historic artworks, which were taken during the British colonial invasion of Benin in 1897, have been held in Dutch museums for decades.

This repatriation aligns with growing international pressure for European institutions to return stolen African heritage. Nigerian officials have welcomed the decision, emphasizing the cultural and historical importance of the artifacts to the Benin Kingdom and its people.
The bronzes are set to be returned in phases, with plans for their eventual display at the Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA).
