As year-end school concerts take place worldwide, Haiti is no exception, even as gang violence devastates the country.

In Port-au-Prince, children at the city’s only music school show courage and dedication, pursuing dreams of becoming musicians and singers despite the challenges.

While hundreds of schools have shut down due to violence and financial constraints, this music school remains a beacon of hope. Supported by an NGO, it began offering lessons to children living in internally displaced shelters.

Yvenson Jeantille, an aspiring professional musician, travels long distances to attend classes twice a week. “The situation of the country impacts me, but I don’t let it interfere with my future,” he said.

With gangs controlling approximately 85% of the capital, violence, kidnappings, and rapes have left families fearful of sending children to school or allowing them to play outdoors.

Kevin Marc Duverseau, a teacher at the school, emphasizes the importance of music for the children. “Music helps alleviate frustrations and translate emotions, even negative ones, into something beautiful,” he explained.

As turmoil continues, the Ecole Soleil d’Espoir (School of Hope and Sunshine) provides a sanctuary where children can dream of a brighter, more harmonious future.
