Morocco recorded an unprecedented milestone in its tourism sector in 2024, welcoming over 17 million visitors.
This figure represents a 20% increase from 2023 and exceeds the government’s ambitious roadmap target originally set for 2026, according to the country’s tourism ministry.
The North African nation has invested significantly in enhancing its infrastructure, including modernized airports, improved public transportation, and upgrades to its hospitality industry. These efforts have not only elevated the visitor experience but also solidified Morocco’s position as a leading travel destination.
In a statement carried by the official news agency MAP, the tourism ministry revealed that over half of the visitors were foreigners, with the remainder comprising Moroccans living abroad. Both groups saw notable increases in numbers compared to the previous year.
Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor attributed this growth to “targeted investments in this vital economic sector and the unwavering efforts of tourism professionals.”
Tourism accounted for approximately 7% of Morocco’s GDP in 2023, generating two million jobs. While figures for 2024 are yet to be finalized, the sector’s performance last year signals continued economic contributions.
Key to this success has been Morocco’s strategic expansion of air routes and partnerships with low-cost airlines like Ryanair, further enhancing accessibility for international visitors.
In addition to its current achievements, Morocco is gearing up to host major events such as the FIFA African Cup of Nations this year and the World Cup in 2030.
These developments promise to maintain the momentum in Morocco’s thriving tourism industry and reinforce its reputation as a global travel hub.
