The renowned Festival sur le Niger in Mali took on a different tone this year as a heavy military presence overshadowed the vibrant artistic celebration. The festival, known for showcasing Mali’s rich cultural heritage, unfolded under tight security due to the country’s ongoing security challenges, including threats from insurgent groups.
Held in the historic city of Ségou, the festival attracted musicians, artists, and cultural enthusiasts from across Africa and beyond. However, the event’s usual spirit of joy and artistic freedom was tinged with caution as military personnel patrolled the area to prevent potential attacks.
Despite the heightened security, performances, exhibitions, and discussions proceeded as planned, with organizers emphasizing the importance of preserving Mali’s cultural identity even in turbulent times. 
Attendees expressed a mix of appreciation for the protection and concern over the increasing militarization of public events.
The festival remains a symbol of resilience for Mali’s creative community, standing as a testament to the enduring power of art amid conflict.
