The Berber people do not need air conditioning or artificial heating. While temperatures outside swing between extremes, the interior of these Berber homes is completely insulated, utilizing years of ancestral wisdom and architecture that found harmony with the earth.

They feature open-air courtyards that serve as the nucleus of daily family life, connected by tunneled walkways that interconnect rooms and homes, forming an intricate labyrinth fueled with tales of ancestry, heritage, and adaptation.

Matmata, where a majority of these architectural marvels are located, offers breathtaking views of a landscape where the desert meets distant coastlines. Matmata sits 450 metres above sea level, surrounded by the cities of Gabes, Kebili, Medenine, and Tataouine. It is a true geographical nexus and cultural heartbeat for the people of Tunisia, which reads like a sandstone amphitheater.
