LINX Celebrates 30 Years of Global Connectivity
Reflecting on its three decades of impact, LINX has become one of the largest IXPs globally, revolutionizing how networks connect and collaborate.
Nurani Nimpuno, Head of Global Engagement at LINX, shared insights into the organization’s origins:
“LINX was founded in the 1990s with a clear mission—to keep internet traffic local and avoid unnecessary routing through the US. Today, LINX Africa digital transformation builds on that same commitment by creating resilient, efficient ecosystems tailored to the continent’s unique needs.”
Advancing Local Interconnection Across Africa
LINX’s African expansion began with the launch of its Nairobi hub last year, which quickly grew into a vital node for regional connectivity. Building on this success, the organization introduced additional hubs in Mombasa, Kenya, and Accra, Ghana.
These hubs aim to reduce latency and ensure that African internet traffic stays within the continent.
“Our goal is straightforward: retain African traffic locally,” Nurani explained. “By strengthening local interconnection, we not only improve efficiency but also foster a more sustainable digital ecosystem. These advancements represent a cornerstone of LINX Africa digital transformation.”
Partnering for Digital Growth in Africa
LINX’s strategy relies heavily on collaboration with local stakeholders, including data centers and IP associations. Beyond establishing infrastructure, LINX invests in capacity building through workshops, training sessions, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
“We don’t claim to have all the answers,” Nurani noted. “Instead, we work with local experts who understand their communities deeply. Together, we create solutions that empower individuals and businesses while driving long-term growth.”
Handling Challenges in Africa’s Digital Transformation
Africa’s journey toward digital transformation faces challenges such as limited fiber infrastructure and uneven internet penetration. However, rapid advancements in submarine cables, cloud services, and data centers signal a bright future for connectivity on the continent.
“Africa often bypasses traditional technological steps, adopting advanced systems at an impressive pace,” Nurani observed. “LINX Africa digital transformation reflects this unique trajectory, enabling the continent to leapfrog into a connected and thriving digital era.”
