The sixth edition of the Lagos Dog Carnival brought together dogs of all breeds, shapes, and sizes in a vibrant display of costumes and community spirit.
The annual event featured a catwalk for dogs, dressed in colorful outfits, wings, and accessories, as they strutted proudly along the red carpet.
Celebrating Dogs and Their Owners in Lagos
Jackie Idimogu, the event’s organizer, explained that the carnival is more than just fun—it is a celebration of pet owners and their dedication to their furry companions.
“Before, people just kept their pets at home, spending so much money unappreciated. Here, they get appreciated for all of the hard work they do from January to December, taking care of these pets that cannot talk and say thank you. So, we are here to tell them thank you on behalf of the dogs,” Idimogu said.
This year’s theme, ‘Angels on Paw,’ added a special touch, with several dogs wearing angel wings to honor the occasion.
Blessings for Pets at the Carnival
A unique highlight of the event was the blessing of dogs by Catholic priest Reverend Father Michael Chike-Osamor.
Speaking on the significance of the ritual, he stated, “I know it might smack on some people’s sensibilities to see us blessing pets. But my religion agrees and believes in the place of animals in God’s creation. They are part of God’s gift to us—they are our companions. Not only do they keep us company, but they also give us that warmth of God’s presence.”
Father Chike-Osamor’s presence spotlights the importance of appreciating animals as integral to human lives and God’s creation.

The Dog Carnival: Building Community in Nigeria
For many dog owners, the Lagos Dog Carnival is an opportunity to bond, socialize, and share their love for pets.
Blessing Chukwuma, one of the participants, noted the importance of such events: “We need to have these more often, not just towards the end of the year. It helps with the bond, community building, and all that among dog lovers.”
Despite a slight drop in participant numbers compared to previous years, the event showcased a growing awareness of proper pet care and a thriving dog-loving community in Nigeria.
Showcasing Nigeria as a Dog-Friendly Nation
Jackie Idimogu hopes to change global perceptions about pet culture in Africa, particularly in Nigeria.
She passionately explained her vision: “Africans are not known for being the best pet parents or pet lovers, compared to the Westerners. Here in Nigeria, we are showing the world that we love dogs, adore them, and will do anything for them. I want the world to know that somewhere in Africa, we are celebrating dogs today and every day of our lives.”
Idimogu’s dedication to the cause is helping position Nigeria as a dog-friendly country, one that values and cherishes pets just as much as other nations do.
A Celebration of Dogs and Unity
The Lagos Dog Carnival continues to grow, spotlighting the bond between pets and their owners while fostering a sense of community among dog lovers.
With themes like ‘Angels on Paw,’ the event creates lasting memories for participants and strengthens Nigeria’s reputation as a rising hub for pet appreciation.
