Police reports indicate that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident. “An investigation has been opened to establish how the accident happened,” stated police spokesperson Resila Onyango. Authorities are actively searching for the driver, who remains at large.

Rising Concerns Over Road Safety in Kenya

This recent tragedy highlights the increasing dangers on Kenya’s roads. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 21,620 road crashes were reported from January to November this year alone. These incidents resulted in 4,282 fatalities.

The NTSA attributes the alarming rise in accidents to factors such as vehicle malfunctions, loss of driver control, and dangerous driving behaviors. The Nairobi-Mombasa highway, in particular, has gained notoriety as one of the deadliest major roads in the country.

Call for Action to Improve Traffic Safety

The deadly collision underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in Kenya.

With crashes on the rise, travelers and authorities alike are being urged to prioritize stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, vehicle maintenance, and driver awareness campaigns to mitigate risks.
