Kenya’s Edwin Kibet and Ethiopia’s Guta Hirpa Triumph at 2025 Lagos City Marathon
Kenyan athlete Edwin Kibet Koech and Ethiopian runner Guta Meseret Hirpa emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively, at the 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon.
The highly anticipated race, which attracted thousands of runners from across the world, reaffirmed East Africa’s status as a powerhouse in long-distance running.

In the men’s category, the Kenyan runner, Kibet clinched his second title with a time of 2 hours and 14 minutes and crossed the finish line first, displaying exceptional endurance and speed.

While Hirpa secured her first win, finishing in 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 4.08 seconds, outpacing strong competitors in the final stretch.
Nigerian runner Nyango Gyang Boyi made history by finishing eighth overall, earning him a $4,000 prize and an additional N2 million as the top Nigerian finisher.

The marathon, one of Africa’s premier road races, saw elite and amateur runners take on the grueling course through Lagos’ bustling streets. Fans cheered as the champions celebrated their victories, adding another chapter to the rich history of East African distance running.
Organizers hailed the event as a success, emphasizing its role in promoting sports tourism and healthy living in Nigeria.
