Kenya reinforces its commitment to Haiti by deploying over 200 additional police officers to combat escalating gang violence, nearing its 1,000-troop pledge.
In a significant move to bolster international efforts against escalating gang violence in Haiti, Kenya has dispatched an additional 217 police officers to the Caribbean nation. This deployment, which took place on January 18, 2025, brings Kenya closer to fulfilling its commitment of sending 1,000 personnel to the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, a United Nations-backed initiative aimed at restoring stability in Haiti.
The latest contingent departed Nairobi on Friday, marking Kenya’s third deployment to Haiti since June 2024. With this addition, over 600 Kenyan officers are now actively engaged in operations to curb the rampant gang activities that have plagued Haiti, leading to widespread violence and instability. 
Kenyan Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen highlighted the progress made by the Kenya-led mission, stating that their efforts have significantly reduced gang-related incidents, earning international commendation. Despite initial challenges, including reports of resignations due to pay disputes, Murkomen reaffirmed Kenya’s unwavering dedication to the mission’s objectives.
The MSS mission comprises contributions from ten countries, collectively pledging over 3,100 troops. However, actual deployments have been gradual, with Kenya leading the initiative. Other nations, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, and Belize, have also committed personnel to support Haiti’s security forces in reclaiming control from gangs that dominate significant portions of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

The situation in Haiti remains dire, with the United Nations reporting over 5,600 deaths attributed to gang violence in the past year alone—a 20% increase from 2023. Additionally, approximately 700,000 people have been displaced, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The international community continues to call for increased support and resources to address the root causes of the violence and to aid those affected.
Kenya’s proactive involvement in Haiti underscores a growing trend of African nations taking leading roles in global peacekeeping and security initiatives.
