Japan is calling on skilled international drivers, including Nigerians, to fill critical roles in its transportation sector. As part of its Specific Skilled Worker (SSW) program expansion, the Japanese government has opened positions for taxi, bus, and truck drivers, offering competitive salaries and family relocation benefits.
This initiative, led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s administration, addresses the nation’s declining population and labor shortages due to its aging demographic. The expanded SSW scheme will officially kick off in mid-2025, with recruitment beginning as early as January 2025.
The transport sector jobs come with attractive benefits, including annual earnings ranging from $22,000 to $38,000, depending on the role. Taxi drivers can expect $22,000–$28,000 annually, while bus drivers earn $26,000–$36,000, and truck drivers see $28,000–$38,000 per year, with potential performance bonuses. 
Beyond the competitive salaries, international workers enjoy job stability, integration opportunities, and pathways to long-term residency. Family relocation support is another significant benefit, making this an appealing prospect for skilled drivers looking to start anew in Japan.
To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Driver’s License: A valid license meeting Japan’s standards.
- Skills and Language Tests: A practical driving skills test and proficiency in Japanese.
- Physical Fitness: Clear vision and good health to meet Japan’s safety standards.
- Experience: Prior driving experience is preferred and may be mandatory for some roles.
With plans to bring in 820,000 foreign workers over the next five years, Japan is doubling its previous targets to combat labor shortages. This need is further driven by new regulations limiting driver overtime hours, which are expected to exacerbate the shortfall in the industry.
