Nigeria’s Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to residents in 19 states, the South-East, and coastal areas, alerting them to impending heat stress . With temperatures soaring above 40°C, the agency urges citizens to take necessary precautions to mitigate health risks .

The most affected regions include the North-Central and Eastern states, specifically Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue . NiMet’s updates revealed that Yelwa recorded temperatures of 40°C, while Jalingo and Yola reached 42°C . High temperatures can cause a rise in core body temperature and heart rate and lead to heat stress, heat stroke and, in extreme cases, death .

This early season heat is not limited to Nigeria. In February 2024, the southern coastal zone of West Africa experienced abnormal heat . South Sudan experienced extreme heat in February 2025, and climate scientists warn of heat stress in the Greater Horn of Africa .
