The Guinean government has suggested that the long-anticipated presidential election might take place before the end of 2025.

This announcement comes after the junta, under international pressure, initially committed to transferring power to elected officials by late 2024—a promise it has not fulfilled.

Government spokesperson Ousmane Gaoual Diallo stated that either a presidential or legislative election could be scheduled for October, following a May referendum to approve a new constitution. Despite this timeline, opposition voices remain skeptical.

Siaka Barry, President of the MPDG Party, expressed deep mistrust in the junta’s new promises. Speaking to Africanews, Barry remarked, “When we ask whether we believe in the new promises of the junta… I can assure you today that trust is broken—between all political actors and the junta, between all political actors and the government. Trust is broken.”

General Mamadi Doumbouya, the junta leader, reiterated in his New Year’s address that 2025 would be pivotal for elections aimed at restoring constitutional order. However, specific dates for the elections remain unclear.

Meanwhile, Mr. Diallo and other close allies of Doumbouya are encouraging the general to run for president, despite his repeated assertions that he does not intend to enter the race.

The uncertainty surrounding the junta’s commitments continues to fuel skepticism among Guinea’s political actors and citizens alike.
