Conakry, Guinea – The Forces Vives, a coalition of Guinean opposition groups and civil society organizations, has announced that it will no longer recognize the authority of the military junta after December 31st, 2024.

This date was initially set as the end of the transition period promised by the junta following the 2021 coup, however, the authorities recently extended this timeline, citing the need for a “refoundation of the state.”

Abdoul Sacko, coordinator of the Forum des Forces Sociales de Guinée, expressed deep frustration with the lack of progress towards a return to constitutional order. He criticized the junta’s lack of accountability and transparency throughout the transition process.

“There is no relevant, visible or perfectible approach to a return to constitutional order,” Sacko declared. “Responsibility requires us to engage in efforts to inform and mobilize the populace towards a civil transition.”

The Forces Vives’ rejection of the extended transition signals a potential escalation in the political crisis. The opposition may now intensify efforts to demand adherence to the original timeline and a swift return to civilian rule.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation in Guinea as the deadline approaches.
