John Mahama’s Historic Win

Ghana is set to swear in its new president, John Mahama, on Tuesday following his decisive victory in the December 7, 2024, elections.

Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured 56.55% of the vote, defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which garnered 41.61%. This result marked an emphatic victory for the opposition, winning by nearly 1.7 million votes.

The NDC also claimed a majority in parliament with 183 seats, compared to the NPP’s 88, alongside four independent candidates. Notably, this election has ushered in Ghana’s first female vice president, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, signaling a groundbreaking moment in the country’s history.

Dignitaries Expected at the Event

The inauguration, set to take place at Independence Square in Accra, will be graced by at least 21 heads of state, including Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and Kenya’s President William Ruto.

Former Ghanaian presidents, vice presidents, parliamentary representatives, and officials from global organizations like the African Development Bank and the Commonwealth are also expected.

A US delegation led by Shalanda Young, Virginia Palmer, Karen Bass, and Frances Brown will represent President Joe Biden. Additionally, representatives from the European Union and the United Kingdom have confirmed their attendance.

Swearing-In Ceremony Details

Ghana’s Chief Justice will administer the oath of office, a solemn affirmation that allows the president to officially undertake his duties for a four-year term. The ceremony will also include the presentation of the state sword, symbolizing the president’s commitment to upholding the constitution.

Traditionally held at Independence Square, this year’s event will maintain the venue’s historical significance, where past inaugurations, including Nana Akufo-Addo’s in 2017, took place. The president will also assume the presidential seat, a gold-adorned wooden chair symbolizing the authority and responsibility of the office.

Tradition Meets History

The inauguration reflects Ghana’s rich democratic traditions, where power transitions peacefully. Should a president become unable to serve due to death, removal, or resignation, the vice president assumes the office after being sworn in by the Chief Justice.
