Accra, Ghana – In a significant move to foster regional unity, Ghana will grant visa-free entry to all African passport holders starting early 2025. This decision, approved by President Nana Akufo-Addo in December, positions Ghana as the fifth African country to implement such a policy.

The initiative fulfills a commitment Akufo-Addo made during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues in 2024, aimed at promoting regional integration and easing intra-African mobility.

“Ghana’s future is tied to a united continent. This is about building stronger ties across Africa,” President Akufo-Addo said in a statement, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to pan-African ideals.

Expanded Access

Previously, Ghana offered visa-free access to citizens of 26 African nations and visas on arrival to travelers from 25 others, with only two African countries requiring pre-approved visas.

By removing all visa requirements for African passport holders, Ghana joins Rwanda, Seychelles, Gambia, and Benin in advancing continental unity.

Boosting Integration and Trade

The policy aligns with the African Union’s vision of economic integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), headquartered in Ghana. Experts have long identified visa restrictions as barriers to trade, tourism, and cultural exchange within Africa.

The African Development Bank has noted that countries with restrictive visa policies, like Libya and Sudan, hinder progress toward free movement across the continent.

Strengthening Diaspora Ties

Alongside this visa-free policy, Ghana’s “Beyond the Return” initiative continues to encourage engagement with the African diaspora.

As part of this effort, a Non-Pre-Approval Visa policy ran from 1 December 2024 to 15 January 2025, boosting tourism and economic connections globally.

Transition Amid Legacy

This landmark policy is one of President Akufo-Addo’s final acts in office, as President-elect John Mahama is set to take over on 7 January 2025. Ghana, already ranked fifth on the Visa Openness Index, is expected to strengthen its position as a hub for African travel, trade, and tourism.

By embracing visa-free entry, Ghana not only enhances its global image but also sets a precedent for regional unity, economic integration, and the free movement of people across Africa.
