An Unexpected Path to Stardom
Abou Sangare, a 23-year-old migrant from Guinea, gained international attention in 2024 for his leading role in “L’Histoire de Souleymane” (“Souleymane’s Story”).
The film showcased his portrayal of a food delivery cyclist preparing for an immigration interview, a role that closely paralleled his real-life experiences as an undocumented migrant in France.
His performance earned him the best male performance award in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival.
A Long Journey from Guinea to France
Sangare’s journey began as a teenager fleeing Guinea to fund medical care for his epileptic mother. His route to Europe included crossing the Sahara Desert, navigating the dangers of Algeria and Libya, and a treacherous Mediterranean voyage in an inflatable boat to Italy before arriving in France.
Settling in Amiens, France, Sangare balanced off-the-books car repair jobs with volunteering at a local education charity. Despite having no acting background, he was discovered by director Boris Lojkine during a casting call in his hometown.
Fighting for Legal Recognition
While his on-screen performance won critical acclaim, Sangare faced challenges in securing legal status in France.
After three failed attempts to obtain a work visa, he was finally granted a one-year work permit on Monday, averting the threat of deportation.
His lawyer, Claire Perinaud, confirmed that Sangare can now apply for renewals and transition to a long-term visa in the future.
Returning to His Roots
Despite his newfound fame, Sangare remains committed to his original trade as a mechanic.
Speaking to Liberation, he said, “There might be offers, but I’m a mechanic, that’s my trade. I can’t wait to start working in the garage.”
Director Boris Lojkine expressed his satisfaction with Sangare’s legal breakthrough. “It’s only when he has his papers that I will have the impression of having finished my film,” Lojkine said, reflecting on the responsibility he felt in casting Sangare for the lead role.
A Story of Resilience and Hope
Sangare’s journey from a perilous migration to earning a prestigious Cannes award and securing legal status in France exemplifies resilience.
While he has chosen to step away from acting for now, his story highlights the struggles and triumphs of migrants striving for stability and recognition in a foreign land.
