In Chad, the withdrawal of French armed forces is progressing, with the military base in Abéché scheduled for an official handover this Saturday.
French media reports indicate that military equipment has been gradually removed over the past several days, culminating in a formal ceremony on January 11.
This follows the Chadian government’s decision on November 28 to terminate defense and security cooperation agreements with France, prompting an immediate start to the withdrawal process.
Minister of Armed Forces and Veterans Issakha Maloua Djamous arrived at the Abéché base on Friday afternoon, traveling from N’Djamena aboard a military aircraft sent for the occasion.
The departure of fighter jets from the Adji Kosseï base on December 10 and the earlier evacuation of the Faya base marked significant milestones in this process. Now, the handover of Abéché signals the completion of France’s military presence in this area. Minister of Infrastructure Aziz Mahamat Saleh described the base as being “liberated,” highlighting the significance of the moment.
In Abéché, crowds gathered along the roads to witness the event, expressing their excitement with ululations and cheers as the minister’s convoy passed by, marking a new chapter in Chad’s sovereignty.
